New Zealand aims to achieve 100% renewable electricity by 2030 and net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Meeting these targets will require a significant increase in electricity supply, estimated to be around 70% by 2050, to support the electrification of the New Zealand economy. This translates to a need for approximately 400-500MW of new generation capacity every year until 2050, a rate of development unprecedented in the country's history.
This transition presents both opportunities and challenges in the electricity industry.
